Boehringer Ingelheim is confident in the efficacy and safety of Express® FP vaccines to prevent abortions related to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV), as well as persistently infected (PI) calves from bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), if used correctly and as part of an overall health management program.
Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to working with EXPRESS FP customers to provide veterinary and diagnostic support to identify the causes of any abortions or PI-positive calves. Depending on diagnostic findings, and if all requirements are met, the company may reimburse and compensate the customer, as noted below.
MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS
Vaccines are just one component of a successful animal health program. In addition to vaccination, prevention and control of disease is dependent upon sound management and biosecurity practices. The links below provide some suggested guidelines from the USDA for implementing a biosecurity program.

In addition to the sound management practices outlined above, the following requirements must be met for the company to consider reimbursement:
IBRV ABORTION ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Dams must be vaccinated with an EXPRESS FP vaccine according to label.
- A complete diagnostic work-up must be completed to determine the cause of abortion.
IBRV Compensation: If it is determined the cause of abortion is due to IBR virus and all other requirements are met, Boehringer Ingelheim will reimburse the cost of veterinary services and diagnostics and compensate for the fair market value of a 550-pound calf.
BVDV PI CALF ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Calves must be born to BVDV PI–negative dams vaccinated, according to label directions, with EXPRESS FP vaccines.
- Calves must be PI-tested at the herd of origin prior to weaning.
- If a BVDV PI–positive calf is diagnosed, the calf and dam will be retested at the expense of Boehringer Ingelheim.
- Calves born via embryo-transfer methods do not qualify unless both donor and recipient dams are properly vaccinated with EXPRESS FP vaccines and are proven to be BVDV PI free.
- A BVDV PI–positive calf will be humanely euthanized and properly disposed of at the expense of Boehringer Ingelheim.
BVDV PI Compensation: If a calf is found by diagnostic testing to be BVDV PI positive and all other requirements are met, Boehringer Ingelheim will reimburse the cost of veterinary services as well as retesting of the calf and dam and compensate for the fair market value of the calf at the time that laboratory test results indicated a BVDV PI calf.
MINIMUM DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR REIMBURSEMENT
- Owner’s name, address and phone number.
- ID numbers of dams vaccinated, dates of EXPRESS FP vaccination, and dates of birth.
- Receipt verifying the place and the date of EXPRESS FP vaccine purchases.
- A copy of the negative dam test result and positive calf test result from the laboratory performing the test.
- Preferred additional documentation: serial number, expiration date and number of doses of EXPRESS FP vaccine used to vaccinate dams.

Payment of fair market value of infected or aborted calves shall be the customer’s sole remedy under this Assurance Program. Boehringer Ingelheim will have no other liability or obligations to the customer, whether arising under contract, tort, negligence, strict liability or any other form of action whatsoever; and the company assumes no liability for special, indirect, punitive or consequential damages suffered as a result of use of any EXPRESS FP vaccines or as a result of this Vaccine Assurance Program.
