Incidence of heartworm disease continues to rise throughout the United States. It is increasing not only in states with traditionally high cases but also in regions that previously had low rates. In this post we will take a look at what could be the cause of these rising rates and what we can do moving forward to help decrease these numbers.
The prevalence map from the American Heartworm Society (AHS) shows a 22-year upward trend in the overall heartworm infection rates throughout the United States.1 What’s most alarming is the persistent increase in heartworm infection rates in regions with traditionally low incidences (Washington, Oregon, Kansas, North Dakota, Massachusetts, and Connecticut).1 The AHS research attributes this astonishing increase in these new areas to multiple causes. It cites the likely growth factors as a combination of a greater influx of heartworm-positive animals migrating from other areas, increased testing rates from clinics, and higher infection rates for canines. These numbers suggest that there may be opportunities for veterinary professionals to further enhance their efforts in safeguarding the health of all dogs coming into their clinics.
When it comes to slowing the rapid rate of incidence of heartworm disease, improving pet owner compliance is a critical and challenging issue. Compliance is dependent on several factors, including the need for pet owners to purchase a vet-recommended preventive as well as consistent administration of the prescribed product. Within the veterinary community there is a shared responsibility to help stop the rise of heartworm disease to protect the well-being of dogs and their owners.
It’s up to all of us to act with urgency to ensure that pet owners understand the importance of year-round heartworm disease prevention and that every dog seen by a veterinarian receives the essential preventive they need. #ProtectMoreDogs
