The History of IMRAB® Rabies Vaccines

Over 35 years ago in Georgia, local veterinarians were concerned about the spread of rabies from wild animals to their canine and feline patients.1 Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health research team developed and created RABORAL V-RG®, an oral rabies vaccine for wildlife. Then, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Georgia, a strain from the original human rabies vaccine created by Louis Pasteur was used to create what would become the US market-leading rabies vaccine—IMRAB.3 The research and manufacturing facilities are still located in Athens, Georgia, and have been recently expanded to increase production capacity for the IMRAB, RECOMBITEK®, and PUREVAX® vaccine lines.
