RECOMBITEK® Canine Vaccines

Safe and effective, the entire family of RECOMBITEK® vaccines help provide proven protection for dogs and puppies.

An Integrated Approach

When veterinarians asked for a combination vaccine for core antigens and against leptospirosis, Boehringer Ingelheim developed RECOMBITEK® C8, the only vaccine containing a canarypox-vectored recombinant distemper, and a nonadjuvanted leptospirosis vaccine with a 15-month duration of immunity against Leptospira grippotyphosa.1,2

Historically, canine Lyme disease vaccines have been known to cause increased vaccine reactions, likely resulting from the numerous proteins.3 When asked for a solution to this problem, we created RECOMBITEK® Lyme, the first and only nonadjuvanted canine Lyme disease vaccine created with just a single protein, outer surface protein A (OspA), for pure, targeted protection.4

We listen. We innovate. We solve. That’s how Boehringer Ingelheim gives you the power to help protect your patients from dangerous and deadly diseases while helping you deepen the emotional bond they share with their owners.

Why Recombinant Technology?

The use of recombinant proteins in some of our canine vaccines allows the targeting of immune responses against a few protective antigens.6
This allows vaccines to be developed that contain only the necessary immunogenic protein(s) rather than the entire virus or bacteria.

Different Vaccine Types

There are 3 types of vaccines that are available commercially for dogs and cats: killed (inactivated) vaccines, modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines, and recombinant vaccines.

  • A killed vaccine uses an inactivated (killed) bacteria or virus. Killed vaccines frequently include additional compounds, called adjuvants, intended to help increase the overall effectiveness of the vaccine.7
  • A modified-live virus (MLV) vaccine is a weakened (or attenuated) version of the disease-causing virus. These vaccines stimulate an immune response similar to the response generated through natural infection.
  • Recombinant vaccines contain only the necessary immunogenic protein(s) rather than the entire virus or bacteria. They are developed by selecting individual proteins that are present in that particular virus or bacteria when administered to the patient, only 1 or 2 types of antibodies are created, resulting in a targeted, effective immune response.
