Borrelia burgdorferi Bacterial Extract

RECOMBITEK® Lyme is a liquid suspension of inactivated, purified outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi derived from a bacterial recombinant vector.

INDICATIONS

This product has been shown to be effective for the vaccination of healthy dogs, 9 weeks of age or older, against Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. The duration of immunity is at least 12 months.1

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION

Aseptically administer 1 mL (1 dose) subcutaneously into healthy dogs. For primary vaccination, revaccinate with a second 1-mL dose 2 to 3 weeks later. Historically, annual revaccination with this product has been recommended. The need for annual booster vaccination has not been established for this product.

PRECAUTIONS

Precautions: Contains gentamicin as a preservative. In rare instances, administration of vaccines may cause lethargy, fever, and inflammatory or hypersensitivity types of reactions. Treatment may include antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, and/or epinephrine, as directed by a veterinarian. This product has not been tested in pregnant animals. In case of human exposure, contact a physician.

 

Store at 2-8ºC (35-46ºF). Do not freeze. Do not use chemicals to sterilize syringes and needles. 

 

Do not mix with other products.

Purification Advantages and Lipidation

RECOMBITEK Lyme is the only canine Lyme disease vaccine that is nonadjuvanted and contains lipidated outer surface protein A (OspA) that forms large (418 kDa, 18 nm) complexes.2 

 

Lipidation of OspA is a critical determinant of immunogenicity.3 Veterinary research shows lipidated nonadjuvanted monovalent OspA (RECOMBITEK Lyme) vaccine elicits an earlier onset of immunity with a significantly higher antibody response and a greater concurrent increase in serum borreliacidal activity than a nonlipidated adjuvanted OspA/chimeric outer surface protein C (OspC) vaccine.2
RECOMBITEK Lyme offers effective protection that blocks transmission of B. burgdorferi while still in the tick.4

How the RECOMBITEK® Lyme Vaccine Works

When an infected tick feeds on a vaccinated dog, the OspA-specific antibodies in the dog are ingested by the tick as part of the blood meal. Those antibodies encounter and arrest growth of B. burgdorferi in the gut of the tick, helping prevent migration of the bacteria to the tick’s salivary glands and transmission to the vaccinated dog.5
