The Bursa of Fabricius

A Strong Immune Foundation Begins With Protection Against Serious Diseases

Protecting the Bursa

  • The bursa of Fabricius is a primary lymphoid organ in birds and a major channel through which environmental antigens stimulate the immune system1
  • Removing the bursa in newly hatched chicks was shown to severely impair the ability of adult birds to produce antibodies2
  • Protecting the bursa against infectious bursal disease (IBD) provides an essential immune foundation, allowing birds to respond optimally to external threats throughout their life
